MADA will be focusing on the paddy management system by estate as a step to increase production.

MADA Chairman, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said, the focus will be on increasing production with each area containing one exemplary plot.

Before this the only paddy estate in the state was in Jelai, Pendang.

He said, the four districts identified are area 1, Kampung Bohor Rotan Pahit in Perlis sixty-three hectares; area 2 2, in Kubang Pasu Kampung Masjid Kuala Sungai seventy-nine hectares; area 3, in Jelai Pendang seventy-nine hectares and area 4, in Batu 14 Yan eighty-five hectares.

He added, the farmers should switch to modern methods and that the estate solution will guarantee the increase of production.

Farmers in Jelai, Pendang recorded an increase from 6.12 tonnes per hectare to 8.2 tonnes using the method.

He was speaking to reporters after chairing the MADA meeting in Ampang Jajar in Alor Setar.

He also said two hundred fifty farmers will be involved in the project and will begin using the method this coming season.

He also said the response from farmers is very positive.

The arrival of Singaporean tourists to Langkawi is expected to rise after AirAsia and Singapore’s Tiger Airways scheduled direct flights between the republic and the island.

AirAsia will have the direct flights to Singapore starting from June 1, while Tiger Airways will start its direct flight to Langkawi in August.

MATTA Kedah Chairman, Pishol Ishak said, Tiger Airways will add to the existing direct flights between Singapore and Langkawi as well as the existing services provided by Silk Air.

He added the step taken is very much welcomed and hopefully it will increase the volume of tourists’ arrival to the island.

The Tourism Statistics Unit for LADA recorded thirty seven thousand nine hundred eighty-eight tourists arrived from Singapore last year, compared to thirty four thousand six hundred forty three recorded in 2007.

Singaporean tourists ranks fourth after United Kingdom, Thailand and Australia.

During the first quarter of this year, some four-thousand Singaporean tourists had visited the island.
