"Langkawi Mango" will be the new brand name for the Chokanan Langkawi mango produced in this island.

Federal Marketing Authority (Fama) fresh produce marketing senior director Ahmad Ishak told Bernama here yesterday that the new name was easier to pronounce and was more suited to the Langkawi name.

Fama targets to market 60 tonnes of "Langkawi Mango" this year and so far has sourced 17.05 tonnes from farmers growing the popular fruit.

He was met at the MOU signing between FAMA and the participants of the the program.

He added FAMA will produce the packaging with the new name.

Last year the farms under the project produced 72.7 metric tones values at one hundred twenty one thousand four hundred fifty ringgit.

This year they are expected to produce 60 metric tones of mangoes.

The Agriculture and Agro-Based Ministry will intensify its effort in eradicating pests of paddy crop while maintaining the natural balance around paddy fields.

Its minister, Datuk Mohd Johari Baharom said, the most common pests like mites, Apple Snails and mice needs to be checked.

He said, before this, the effort to control these pests were made by individuals and are not synchronized.

He added, a collective effort will ensure better result and that MADA has already came up with a working paper which will be distributed after approval by the cabinet.

He also said, as there are some areas in the state which cannot produce the expected two yields per year, the out-dated irrigation system will be revised.
