Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the efforts to strengthen national unity and solidarity are not solely the responsibility of the government but also the individuals among the Malaysian society.
He said individuals could contribute to the effort by caring for their friends from various races.
Najib said that small gestures such as making friendly phone calls or sending cordial text messages, and offering assistance to those in need, would go a long way in nurturing unity.
He said people of various races should also help one another in times of trouble.
For instance, when an accident happened, they should help the victims without asking whether they are Chinese, Malay or Indian because they are all Malaysians in need of help.
He said this at the Wesak Day 2009 celebrations at the Fo Guang Shan Dong Zen Temple in Jenjarom near Banting, today.

The Island Car Company Sdn Bhd is planning to produce a light car here soon.
The four-seater, to be named "Helang", can be used to take tourists around the resort island, the company's operation director Richard Boggon told Bernama.
Helang is the Malay word for eagle.
He said the car would be using several Perodua Kancil components, including the 660cc engine while the body would be made of fibre glass.
He said for a start, the company plans to produce one hundred units of the Helang car at the company's workshop here.
He said the company had yet to decide on the price.
Boggon gave the assurance that the car would be comfortable, economical, and equipped with safety features.
He added the company plans to set up a manufacturing plant here and is now identifying a suitable site.
Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad rode the car's prototype at the Harbour Park here yesterday.
